Weekly Message for the Week of April 8th

Dear Tiffany Families,

I hope this email finds you well and that you have all enjoyed the spring sunshine this weekend!  It was a welcomed change from the cold rainy weather we have been experiencing.

Here is the information for the week:

Solar Eclipse Information for Monday

As you may be aware, on Monday, April 8, 2024, an extraordinary celestial event will occur in North America as a solar eclipse will cast its shadow across the continent. While San Diego County will experience a partial eclipse rather than a total one, the event is nonetheless significant. The San Diego region is expected to witness a partial eclipse that will begin around 10 a.m., peak at 11:11 a.m., and end at 12:23 p.m.

To ensure the safety and well-being of all our students and staff during this event, the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) has implemented a rainy day schedule for all schools on April 8th. This means that recess and lunch activities will be conducted indoors. Parental permission is required for classrooms intending to incorporate eclipse viewing into their curriculum, and adherence to NASA’s safety standards regarding appropriate viewing gear is mandatory.

Some teachers have sent home permission slips for students whose classrooms plan to engage in educational activities centered around the eclipse outdoors. Please return the permission slip to your classroom teacher on Monday morning.  Students that do not have a permission slip will not be able to participate in those activities outdoors with classroom teachers that have planned activities.  Again, this is only some classrooms that have elected to participate in an outdoor activity.

Our classrooms also will have access to NASA’s livestream of the event so that they can see the full eclipse from the parts of the country who will be in the path.

If you have any additional questions, please let me know. You can also learn more about what CVESD is doing and safety tips by visiting cvesd.org.

Registration for the 24/25 School Year is OPEN!  If you have a new, incoming student, for the 2024-25 school year, it is not too soon to get your child registered.  Our enrollment determines our staffing for the following year, so the sooner we know how many students to expect, the better idea we have for the staffing we will need to support their learning.

The entire process is online at www.cvesd.org.  Click HERE to go the registration page – you will find the information/documents you will need to fully register.  If you have any questions, please reach out to our office at 619-421-6300.

Students Crossing at Major Intersections and Parking Lot Safety

I received a call this week from a concerned community member when she witnessed a young elementary student crossing at Rutgers and H Street, against traffic, shortly after our dismissal.  Cars had to stop to accommodate the student crossing when the cars had the right-of-way and the student should have been waiting at the curb to cross.  The student was crossing to an older school-aged student, who was waiting on the other side of the street.

Thankfully, the student was safe due to the careful driving of the drivers at that moment, but it could have been so much worse.  The community member did not know if the student was from Tiffany, but felt compelled to call us to remind our students of this danger, as the proximity to our school and our dismissal time made it possible that it was one of our students.  Please take a moment to remind your children that we must adhere to all traffic patterns and cross when it is safe to do so.  Thank you for your support.

For your review, here are the traffic and parking lot expectations:

  • Red Curbs – “as required under California Vehicle Code Section 21458(a)(1), a curb painted red shall indicate no stopping, standing, or parking whether the vehicle is attended or unattended.”
  • The left lane in the parking lot is for traffic to move through.  Parking/stopping in the left lane blocks cars from being able to exit.  Students should not exit or enter vehicles that are in the left lane.
  • Use crosswalks for crossing the street and parking lot.  When dropping students off, please be sure that they exit the vehicle on the right so that they get out directly onto the sidewalk closest to the school building.
  • Follow traffic patterns and do not double park along parking spaces.
  • Right turn only out of our lot during arrival and dismissal.
  • Bus loading and unloading areas are for district vans and buses only

If you would like to volunteer in our parking lot, please let me know at crystal.sutton@cvesd.org.
